THE BRIDGEPORT FREE METHODIST CHURCH

In 1921 from May 15 to June 5, a meeting was held in the old pavilion In Lanterman Park. The Evangelist was Rev. Mrs. Blanch Perigo, now deceased, and the sing­er was Miss Lillian Cole. There were four charter members, namely: Mrs. Nora Andrews, Mrs. Anne Akers, Mrs. Betty Chanseler, and Mrs. Josie Cunningham

On June 5, 1921 a class of forty was taken into the church by Mrs. Perigo.

A hall was rented near the elevator and services were held there for a while. The first minister was Rev. E.H. Kennedy, who was from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He stayed until January 1923, and Rev. A.J. Smith, father of Mrs. Perigo, came. Rev. Smith is deceased. The basement church was erected under the leadership of Rev. Smith.

Mrs. Ed. Clegg was the first Sunday School Superin­tendent of the new society. Sunday School was then held at 2:30 on Sunday afternoon.In June 1922 at the children’s service, held in the hall, the first offering was taken for the basement church. It was received in a foot-tub and amounted to $57.17.

Rev. Smith stayed until the fall, of 1925, when Rev. W.W. Denbo was sent to serve the society. In the year 1926 the present church building was erected and was de­dicated on October 7, 1926 by Rev. A.D. Zahniser of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He later became bishop and is now deceased.

In the fall of l939 a new pipe furnace with blower system, Sunday school and Restrooms were furnished, besides other improvements on the church. The membership in March, 1940, including junior members was sixty-five.
